Innovation and Choice
The Honors College at NNU provides an integrative learning experience for academically accomplished students. The coursework offers an alternative to some of the general education requirements. As it gives students access to a unified and flexible approach to knowledge, the Honors College offers significant interdisciplinary learning experiences. Class structure includes team teaching and small seminar-style discussion groups. The screening and selection committee establishes specific program acceptance criteria, and enrollment is limited. A Community of Diversity
Students pursuing different course work from different communities and cultural backgrounds make up this group of young men and women who seek to gain a better understanding of the modern world. The students seek not to determine a "right" response based in knowledge, but rather to interact with the multiple applications of various accepted truths as they influenced human thought throughout history. Challenged to take their knowledge and filter it through a process of critical thought, students are encouraged to make application of their experience in their own lives. Students accepted into the program form a cohesive learning group that stays together for the entire university experience.
Unique, Innovative Courses
For freshmen, Western Intellectual Traditions is an interdisciplinary, historically sequenced, two-semester course covering several historical periods: Greek, Roman, and early Christian; Renaissance and Reformation; Enlightenment; and Modern and Contemporary. This course takes students on an intellectual journey encompassing the whole scope of human thought. The NNU honors student is challenged to examine the important themes, issues, and periods in the development of Western thought. Reading and dialoging about influential texts, from the Bible to current fiction and nonfiction, engages the student in creating ethical and reasonable conclusions regarding their personal and professional goals.
Sophomores in the Honors College take Science and Science Fiction and Being Mortal. These separate semester-long classes are team-taught by professors in the Science, English, Philosophy, and Theology departments. Honors students in these engaging classes receive innovative, individualized instruction, and the courses fulfill specific general education requirements as outlined in the university catalog.
Honors juniors take Honors Thesis Research, a semester-long course in which Dr. Steve Shaw prepares the Honors students to write their senior Honors thesis papers. Students will choose their faculty advisers, choose and narrow their topics, develop their thesis statements, and solidify their mastery of academic research techniques.
The Honors College experience culminates for seniors with Honors Thesis, a course taken in the fall that gives students the opportunity to create a faculty-mentored, discipline-specific academic thesis. In majors that require a thesis or project, this course will enhance and complement the major departments' requirements.
