Supporting students for academic success
by Heidi Tracht, Director of the Center for Academic Success & Advising
At NNU, we want to help our students prepare for their future by empowering them to be successful in the classroom. A college education is not about getting good grades and keeping a high GPA. It’s about learning the ability to think critically and ethically. We want our graduates to be agents of change in this world, and we prepare them to do so by establishing patterns of success in the classroom. We also understand that college level learning can be difficult and not all students feel prepared for the academic rigors of a university. We intentionally offer a variety of support systems for our students housed in the Center for Academic Success & Advising (CASA).
CASA is conveniently located in the Leah Peterson Learning Commons, our one-stop shop for all student learning needs. This includes the Riley Library, Technology and Media Resources, and the Doceo Center for Learning and Innovation. Our approach to service is fully student-centered. We love NNU students and want them to be as successful as possible! Peer tutors are carefully hired and trained by CASA faculty to provide high-quality writing consultations, subject-area peer tutoring, academic coaching and supplemental instruction. CASA faculty and staff also welcome student interaction in a variety of ways—including math, english, writing, academic coaching and disability services.
CASA is a friendly office open to students Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Peer tutors and writing consultants are available by appointment throughout the day and during select evening hours. In addition, CASA offers drop-in hours for math and writing support. Our space is inviting and created intentionally to promote active engagement among students in the center of academic activity on campus. Students are welcome to either pop in for a quick update or schedule weekly appointments for accountability and encouragement. Our proximity to the campus coffee shop ensures a high level of natural traffic!
Next time you visit the campus, please stop by and say hello! We welcome your questions about our services in the Center for Academic Success & Advising.
